3)Survey: Boating makes for a better life

Boaters are healthier and happier than their nonboating counterparts. According to the findings of a survey conducted by Impulse Research Corp, boaters average nearly 7-1/2 hours a week in active recreation, compared with less than 5-1/2 for nonboaters. The findings indicate that 83% of boat owners believe their health is excellent or good, compared to 77% of nonboaters. 67%of boat owners believe that having a boat has contributed to their well-being. Landlubbers have been hospitalized slightly more than boat owners (14% to 11%) and tend to be more overweight than their boating counterparts.

Nearly 2/3 of boat owners said owning a boat has brought their family closer. Boat owners experience greater self-esteem (+10%), ability to enjoy life (+9%) and a better sex life (+7%).
Non-boat owners are more prone to feeling useless, lonely, unhappy or excessively fatigued, the survey finds. They are more prone to feeling useless (+8%), lonely (+7%) unhappy (+5%) and fatigued (+4%). Most boat owners said the benefits of owning a boat include being outdoors (89%), spending time on the water (85%), being able to unwind and leave pressures behind (79%), and finding tranquility (71%).

4) Boating interests kill N.J. speed limit

A controversial plan to impose a 30-mph top speed on all of New Jerseys inland waterways died Wednesday, after a five-month outpouring of opposition from boaters and marine businesses. A crowd of 100 people never got to voice its opposition at the meeting of the states Boating Regulation Commission, as panel chairman Roger Brown opened the session with a motion to withdraw the plan. Brown cited two main reasons for abandoning the proposal: the opposition it generated among marine businesses and boat owners; and the dim prospects for enforcement, given the limited resources of the states marine police. The Boating Regulation Commission first began considering the speed limit in September. The state currently has no speed limit on its inland waterways. The proposal would have placed a 30-mph limit on all of the states coastal waters, including New Jerseys portion of the Intracoastal Waterway and areas of the Hudson River and Raritan Bay.
